The utter failure of trying to teach kids stuff…

What happens if you give a thousand Motorola Zoom tablet PCs to Ethiopian kids who have never even seen a printed word? Within five months, they’ll start teaching themselves English while circumventing the security on your OS to customize settings and activate disabled hardware.
Two responses immediately spring to mind for me in this:
(1). After decades of spending billions of dollars to teach kids stuff, repeatedly seeing it is not happening and further learning that, when it does, it’s not of all that much value anyway, why can’t we chuck it all and just focus on teaching kids how to learn instead?
(2). When are they going to do this study properly??? To do exactly what they did with this village with another one, but, also drop off a combined solar-powered WIFI hub and high-speed two-way satellite internet connection (Pre-connect all the tablets to the WIFI) so we can see what these kids can do with access to the knowledge of the world.
